I currently have limited openings in the studio, with both weekend and weeknight availability. Please contact me, if you are interested in learning happy and healthy singing techniques!
I offer private, one-on-one weekly or twice-weekly instruction to students ages 10-110. I accompany my students (on piano) as much as possible and encourage healthy singing, coupled with a working knowledge of the voice. Singing is, above all, FUN. If you love it, you can learn it.
My goal is to give my students a “toolbox” for their vocal technique, so that they can work towards a healthy, free and easy production. I believe my students should be able to sing for a lifetime of enjoyment, so I strive to provide them with a firm foundation of knowledge in how their own voice works.
Greg Hebert, Corona Del Sol High School Choral Director“I have known Rachel Velarde for over fifteen years while at Corona Del Sol. During that time, she has worked wonders with my high school students by providing private lessons. Many of her students have made Regional and All-State Honor Choirs, and received vocal music scholarships as well as awards in singing. Her knowledge and expertise is second to none." June 3, 2009
Suzanne Durkin-Bighorn“Rachel has been working with our daughter as a voice instructor for almost two years. The results are evident. My daughter has made it to several final rounds at state wide competiotions, named to the Arizona High School All-Regional choir and she has competed at other major events. Rachel not only works on the voice but on the physical, mental and academic components of music with her students. Rachel runs an efficient and profesional studio and truly pushes her students to new levels.” June 3, 2009
Rebecca De La Torre“I have studied with Rachel 12 years and my voice alone is proof of her excellent teaching skills and understanding of vocal pedagogy. I have also hired her to assist the overall singing in my choir, which has seen significant improvements in only a couple master classes.” June 4, 2009

I have been teaching private voice lessons since 1993. I came to A.S.U. with a graduate teaching assistantship in voice - teaching voice lessons to music majors for college credit. I am an internationally known singer and continue both performing and increasing my knowledge of the voice. My students sing annually at the NATS Student Auditions and the NATS Music Theater Student Auditions. Former students from the studio are successful vocal majors at USC, Marymount Manhattan College, ASU, U of A, and NAU.
I grew up attending the Indiana University Children's Choir, the Indiana University Young Pianists program, and the Indiana Univerisity Young Dancer's Ballet Program. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree with a music major from Smith College. I have two Master of Music degrees from Arizona State University - one in Vocal Performance, and one in Vocal Pedagogy (the science of teaching the voice), as well as a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree in Vocal Performance, and I recently completed training and a practicum to become a Wicklund Certified Singing Voice Specialist (SVS), working with singers with vocal disorders. I continue to study, perform, practice, and improve both my own voice and my teaching skills.
I am a past President of the Valley of the Sun Chapter of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) and remain active in the organization at the local, regional, and national levels. I am a member of the Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society. I am a lifetime member of the Classical Singer Community as both a singer and a teacher. I also hold memberships in NYSTA (New York Singing Teachers Association) and the Pan American Vocology Association (PAVA).
I have two beautiful daughters and an amazing, supportive husband. I am able to accompany on the piano most of my students for many competitions. I love to read, and am rarely without reading material. Above all, my passion is music and I am blessed to be able to share the love of music with my family and my students.
My students regularly place in the Arizona NATS Student Auditions & in the Arizona NATS Music Theater Student Auditions. My high school students are successful annually at the Regional Honor Choir Auditions and many make it into the Arizona All-State Choir. I have former students who have attended all three of the major Arizona universities (Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University, University of Arizona) as music majors or minors, as well as several who have attended out-of-state schools as music majors or minors. Former students regularly return to me for lessons, most recently a student is now Skyping in for lessons from Boston.
My students are able to compile a personal “toolbox” of vocalises and techniques that enable them to practice specifically and successfully on their own. Each student becomes aware of his/her own voice and is able to allow it to be free and develop into the instrument that it was made to be. Through practice, listening to their lesson, attention to detail, and individual guidance, my students realize their vocal abilities.
I love to sing and being able to pass on this love of singing to my family and students is one of my greatest joys in life. This is not just my business, but my avocation.
